Penny constantly updates her knowledge through compulsary professional development, (CPD), to enable her to provide each customer with an individual worming /treatment programme tailored to their needs.
SQP's are regulated by a government body known as the AMTRA, (Animal Medicines Training & Regulatory Authority). The Veterinary Medicines Directorate, (VMD) oversee the registration and competence of all SQP’s, approves the premises in which they work and also monitors the safety, efficacy and quality of all veterinary medicines.
The entire supply chain of prescription medicines is very vigorously regulated and all those in the chain are duty bound to provide the best possible advice and guidance to you, the user.
An SQP is completely unbiased in the products they recommend. They are not employed by any drug manufacturer or influenced by price. It is their job to ensure your animal/pet is treated correctly and safely, taking in to account all relevant information provided by you.
Hard evidence shows that continual use of the same active ingredient can and has lead to resistance, so it is imperative to seek professional advice.

HEALTH & CIRCUMSTANCES
ALL HORSES HAVE WORMS!!
Do not be misled by old wives tales and yard gossip telling you otherwise. Wild horses have worms, but it is domestication that increases the risk of an excessive worm burden and for this reason we need to take responsibility as owners and treat our horses accordingly.
Different chemicals work in different ways within the body of the dosed horse, so thought needs to be given to such circumstances as age, general health and condition, administration to mares, foals and stallions, number of horses on the pasture and also pasture management.
There are many ways in which pasture management such as poo picking and rotational field use can help in reducing the need to use chemical wormers. Faecal egg count kits are also a useful tool in preventing resistance. However, these should never be used as a complete substitute for worming your horse.
Tell the SQP about your particular circumstances and let them tailor a plan specifically for you or your yard.
A common mistake when treating horses is under dosing, so ascertain the weight of your horse as accurately as you can either by using a weight tape or even better a weigh bridge. Correct dosing is incredibly important! If you under dose you horse the product will not work efficiently and could lead to resistance or future problems such as colic.
If you administer a sub therapeutic level of the drug and thereby expose the worms to the drug, but perhaps not at a sufficient dosage to kill them, the worms that survive treatment may pass on their “immunity” to subsequent generations. Those generations will then become more adept at surviving further chemical treatments, with the potential for resistance to develop to that drug.
It is important to dose accurately!
HERBAL FORMULATIONS
Herbal worming products are available. They use a specific combination of plants to repel parasites. However, as data is limited with regard to how effective theses herbal preparations are in combating worm burden, it is best to take expert advice before relying on herbal products.
THE ENVIRONMENT
Don’t forget the environment when purchasing your products. Be particularly concerned about the aquatic life in and around your pastures. Make sure that NO product enters the water courses and protect the flora and fauna from spillage and waste.
Above all, be careful when administering worming products when other animals are about. If you have cats and dogs, take extra care, as some products are very dangerous and can be fatal if indigested, particularly by collies.
We are more than happy to help out with any queries that you may have with regard to worming your horses, so please feel free to speak to our animal health advisor, Penny, in store.
